Student Hall of Fame
Students can enter the Hall of Fame in two ways. They can either start in developmental math and go on to finish the credit level of math requirements for their major and graduate, or they can overcome a significant educational barrier such as test anxiety. Below you can read the inspiring stories of students who are achieving their dreams!
Ryan Latham
Ryan first took my Introductory Algebra course (MATH 082) in the Fall of 2020. At this time, COVID was still shutting down the world so his class was in a remote synchronous format. Despite the challenging learning environment, Ryan earned an A in the course. In fact, he did so well his first semester at CCBC that he was placed in the honors program!
Passing MATH 082 allowed Ryan to take and pass Introduction to Statistical Methods (MATH 153) and ultimately graduate in the Spring of 2022. Ryan then continued his education at Washington College where he is studying English with a minor in Education. Ryan has already begun his student teaching and plans to teach high school English upon graduation in the Spring of 2025.
Autumn Ross
Autumn’s first math course at CCBC was MATH 081. She began in the Spring 2020 semester which means she was only in-person for half the semester before COVID struck and classes went remote. In a time when the world went crazy and many students withdrew, Autumn finished the semester strong, passing MATH 081 and registering for my MATH 082 course in the Fall. In fact, Ryan (above) and Autumn were in the same remote synchronous section of MATH 082. Autumn passed this course and went on to take my Introduction to Statistical Methods (MATH 153) course in the Fall of 2021. Autumn graduated with a degree in XXX in the Spring of 2022. I am so proud of her!
Megan Rayner
Megan enrolled in my AMP 081/082 course in the Fall of 2023. Initially she expressed a high level of anxiety about math in general and specifically about taking tests. I loaned her the book I had on math anxiety which she read. She also visited office hours frequently to get help. All of this hard work paid off for Megan who earned 100% on the first exam! She went on to pass both the MATH 081 and MATH 082 portions of this course. Megan is still a student at CCBC. She is majoring in XX and plans to graduate in XXX
Sierra Thomas
Sierra was enrolled in my MATH 083 course in the Spring of 2023. She had already taken the class once but did not pass because of her severe test anxiety. After doing poorly on the first test, Sierra and I met and discussed her grade on the exam and her test anxiety. That is when Sierra shared that she had always done poorly on exams, even in high school. We talked and discussed it, and I offered to help her as much as possible. All that effort paid off when Sierra passed the second test with an A and went on to do well on the remainder of the exams and then pass the course. Congratulations, Sierra, for overcoming your test anxiety!
